Debating Competition
20090730 Thursday 30 July 2009
On Wednesday, 29 July, two of the three undefeated teams in Keysborough A Grade, Haileybury Boys 1 and Haileybury Girls 1, played off for a place in the DAV Finals. It was an unforgettable debate. The topic was a secret one – 'That Australia should introduce a national ID card' – and to add to the difficulties of preparing a case in one hour, Chandni Dhingra and Duncan Wallace had to return via taxi from doing the Undergraduate Medicine & Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT). Andrew Toh, Rohan Dasika, and Duncan Wallace, supported by teammate Jason Lee, have only lost one debate in their last twelve; and yet on Wednesday night it was the girls turn, with Brooke Tonkin, Chandni Dhingra and Anna Pitchouguina, with help from teammate Smrithya Balasubramanian, who were dynamic and passionate in their opposition to the topic. The girls made history by being the first Haileybury girls team to make the State finals of the DAV competition.
